The Illegal Trade of Sex Toys

While we are celebrating our Independence Day here in the USA, you may not be aware that there are places in the world - and even in our own country - that the sale or possession of sex toys is against the law. Yes, by selling, displaying, purchasing and using sex toys in some places will get you thrown into jail! So, where are these dark corners of our planet where sexual freedom comes at a price? EroticToyTown is here to answer all those questions for you!

India - Section 292 of the Indian punitive code lay out the country's way of dealing with obscenity, which covers things like erotic novels, paintings of naked individuals, and sex toys. To this day, the possession and sale of toys like dildos and vibrators are technically against the law, but there are ways around it. Vibrating toys are sold as 'massagers', and lubricant is sold for 'enjoyment' in the open air markets. We feel this whole issue in India is quite strange, especially given the fact that the Kama Sutra, which was written by an Indian, expressly says that if a man cannot satisfy a woman, he can use tools to help him do so.

United Arab Emirates - While researching this article, we came across the tale of a expatriate who was living in the UAE. She had ordered a number of sex toys online, from a supplier outside of the country. Not only were her goods seized at customs, she was made to sign an affidavit confirming the fact that she would never repeat her crime - the purchase of sex toys - again. Like India, though, shops in the UAE have found ways around the prying eyes of customs - namely by only selling these toys in very high end lingerie boutiques which frequented mainly by women. Yes, you can buy a sex toy in the United Arab Emirates, but you will pay ten times the cost, and run the risk of breaking the law.

Thailand - Thailand is known for their booming sex trade (among other things), so you would think that there'd be no problem with sex toys. In fact, not only is prostitution illegal in Thailand, so is the sale of sex toys. Like the sex working trade, though, it is very easy to find on the black market. You'll find vibrators and dongs for sale in street markets, but there won't be an EroticToyTown store opening up any time soon!

Alabama, USA - Yes, even in the great country that we live in, there are certain places where the sale of sex toys is against the law. Alabama's Anti-Obscenity Enforcement Act prohibits "any person to knowingly distribute, possess with intent to distribute, or offer or agree to distribute any obscene material or any device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs for anything of pecuniary value." First time offenders face a $10,000 fine and a year in prison, while repeat offenders can face up to ten years in prison. The Alabama law forbidding the sale of sex toys has been on the books since 1998, it was unsuccessfully challenged as recently as 2009 and is still enforced today.
